Pakistan captain Babar Azam was booed by the crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad at the toss in the biggest blockbuster of World Cup 2023 - the India vs Pakistan match on Saturday, October 14. The boos were heard at the biggest cricket stadium in the world when Babar Azam walked up to the middle to give his assessment of the toss and the conditions.
Rohit Sharma won the toss in Ahmedabad and India opted to bowl, taking the early advantage in the 8th meeting between the two sides in 50-over World Cups.
In a welcome news for the hosts, Shubman Gill was back in the side, replacing Ishan Kishan after recovering from dengue. A huge roar went up in the crowd when Rohit announced that Shubman was back to make his World Cup debut as the fans in Ahmedabad cheered the Gujarat Titans hero who has a sensational record in Ahmedabad.
The noise at the Narendra Modi Stadium was deafening as the two captains walked out for the toss after a grand musical ceremony which was witnessed by the spectators. A sea of blue turned up to pack the stands as the Indian tri-colour was being waved across all stands of the ground.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam did not respond to the boos but talked up the atmosphere, saying that playing in front of a packed stadium in Ahmedabad will help them enjoy the contest and offer them an opportunity to give their best.
"We have had good two wins, momentum and confidence is high. Jam-packed stadium, we will enjoy it. We want to be good in the field, we had a couple of good practice sessions," Babar Azam said at the toss.
Pakistan remained unchanged from their win over Sri Lanka. Babar Azam's men headed into the big-ticket contest after having scripted a World Cup record run-chase as they chased 345 with hundreds from Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan.
On the other hand, India also opened their campaign with back-to-back wins, hammering 5-time champions Australia in Chennai and then outclassing Afghanistan in New Delhi.
