Ashes, 1st Test: Australia could use Cameron Green as a 'sacrificial lamb' on day 5, says Kevin Pietersen

By India Today Sports Desk: Kevin Pietersen has suggested that Australia could use Cameron Green as a sacrificial lamb and ask him to go out and try to smack the ball all over the park on day 5 of the first Ashes 2023 Test.

The first Test is set for a thrilling climax on Tuesday as Australia need 174 runs to win and England need seven wickets. rain has delayed the start of play on day 5 of the Test at Edgbaston with Usman Khawaja and Scott Boland at the crease for Australia.

With the match being so evenly poised at the moment, Pietersen was asked on Sky Sports if Green could hold the key. The former England captain said that the all-rounder could be used by the Aussies as a sacrificial lamb and they could ask him to go out and play some shots, especially against Moeen Ali.

Pietersen said that the last thing the Australian fans would want to see is Green knocking the ball around when Moeen comes on to bowl.

"Hopefully we can about 50 or 60 overs in, because I think that will be enough and will dictate who wins this game.

"I chucked a theory out there that you could almost use Cameron Green as a sacrificial lamb. Say to him 'Go out there, play like you played against India - go and smack it'. He's a tall, strong guy, there is nothing that is going to worry him on this wicket.

"You've got Travis Head, you've got Carey, you've got Cummins - you've got a few batters."

"Why can't you almost use that sacrificial lamb in Cameron Green who goes out and smacks 40 off not too many balls, especially against Moeen Ali?"

"The last thing you want to see as an Australian is Moeen Ali coming on and Cameron Green starting to just knock it around."
