Ashes 2023: England's Bazball mantra exciting to play against, says David Warner

By India Today Sports Desk: Australia opener David Warner has said that England's Bazball mantra has been exciting to play against ahead of day 5 of the first Ashes 2023 Test at Edgbaston.

England have achieved a lot of success since adopting the method under the leadership of Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum following their Ashes humbling in Australia in 2021. England have gone on to win 11 out of their last 13 matches as they have always focused on looking for the win.

Even in the match at Edgbaston, Stokes took everyone by surprise when he decided to declare at 393/8 on day one and the aggressive approach from the hosts was evident in the second innings as they set Australia a target of 281.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Day 5, Warner said that the way England are trying to entertain fans is fantastic and it is exciting to play against them. The opener also said that Australia wouldn't look to get caught up in the way the hosts are trying to play.

"It has been exciting. It has been one of those games in a fast-forward tempo.

"I guess the way England are trying to entertain the rest of the world is fantastic and at the end of the day, it is still Test cricket.

"For us, it is exciting but we have still got to play the way we play and not get caught up in the way the English are trying to play."

"I saw a lot of wickets being thrown away and this is what is going to happen with the brand they play," said Warner.

Commenting on the run chase, as Australia need 174 runs on the final day, Warner said that they would need to focus on their own method and should be able to chase the score down.

"I think given the tactics of Stokesy with the fields being placed, we are going to get the opportunity to pierce the field."

"We have to focus on our own method. If we can bat normal, I think we should be able to chase this down," said Warner.
