Ashes 2023: I'm always ready for a chance to take Test wickets, says Joe Root ahead of Lord's Test

Speaking ahead of the second Test, as quoted by BBC Sport, Root said he is always ready to pick wickets in Test cricket, adding he wants to step up in the big moments for his team. Australia beat England by two wickets at Edgbaston to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series. Usman Khawaja was the standout batter for Australia, scoring 141 runs in the first innings and chipping in with a gritty 197-ball 65 in the second.

“It's great when you get a chance to contribute, you want to be involved and step up in the big moments. I'm always ready for a chance to take Test wickets,” said Root.

He went on to say that everyone should expect the same style of cricket from England, while insisting that everyone is in for a hell of a Test series. A captain’s knock from Pat Cummins saw Australia chase down 174 runs on the final day of the Edgbaston Test, which saw him remain unbeaten on 44 and guide his side to victory with just 27 balls and two wickets remaining.

“We just have to go and do it again at Lord's and for three more Tests after that. Everyone should strap in and expect the same from us. That's what we're about as a team. We are going to challenge and compete. We're in for a hell of a Test series here,” Root added.

Having lost the first Test, England will be looking to bounce back in the 2023 Ashes series when they take on Australia at Lord’s on June 28.
