Tennis great Martina Navratilova all clear of throat and breast cancer: What a relief

By India Today Sports Desk: Legendary tennis star Marina Navratilova was relieved after she recovered from throat and breast cancer. The now 66-year-old also thanked the doctors and the concerned people for giving her the appropriate treatment.

Navratilova took to Twitter and wrote, “After a day full of tests at Sloan Kettering, I got the all clear! Thank you to all the doctors, nurses, proton and radiation magicians etc- what a relief.”

Back in January 2023, the veteran was diagnosed with cancer. Through her representative, she released a statement where she talked about the seriousness of her illness.

“This double whammy is serious but still fixable, and I’m hoping for a favourable outcome. It’s going to stink for a while but I’ll fight with all have I got,” Navratilova had said.

Back in 2010, the veteran was diagnosed with a noninvasive form of breast cancer, after which she underwent a lumpectomy.

Last year, in November, Navratilova had noticed an enlarged lymph node in her neck. The biopsy revealed that she was in the early stage of throat cancer.

Amidst her struggle with health, Navratilova returned to her work as a TV broadcaster with Tennis Channel during the Miami Open in March.

Navratilova is regarded as one of the greatest of the Open Era. She won 18 Grand Slam singles titles and a total of 167 WTA titles, the most by any female player in the Open Era. Navratilova was deadly on grass, having won Wimbledon nine times, in 1978, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1990.

She won 86.80 percent of her matches (219 out of 1442) and also attained the No.1 ranking for the time back in 1978.
